The April Minute with Mitzel can be viewed here: http://bit.ly/2Dw2z7t.

Hello, Dickinson family, and welcome to A Minute with Mitzel.

We are having an event-filled spring at the College on the Hill thus far. The Unni Boksasp Ensemble, from Norway, visited Dickinson in mid-April. The group visited met with a wide range of educational groups, culminating their trip with an amazing concert on April 13th in DSU’s Stickney Auditorium. I want to thank Dr. Jeremy Wohletz who partnered with Minneapolis-based Arts Midwest to bring four different groups from around the world to Dickinson over the past two years. What a musical and cultural treat!

Dickinson State University’s 2019 Celebration of Scholars was held on April 13 in Klinefelter Hall. This event brings together all the students at DSU who have been participating in research projects, giving them a chance to highlight the work they have completed with either an oral lecture or a poster presentation. There were 45 participants at this year’s Celebration of Scholars, and I continue to be impressed by the high caliber of research undertaken by these young scholars!

The 2019 Albers Humanities Festival was held on the DSU campus April 11th and 12th. The theme of this gathering was “Post Apocalypse Now,” and involved a variety of panel discussions, presentations, and movie viewings.  We hope that you were able to participate in one of the aforementioned events, or one of the many others that have been offered on the DSU campus.

Events at DSU show no sign of slowing and we invite the community to participate whenever possible!

Taste of Nations will be hosted in The Perch on April 23rd beginning at 5:00 pm. Attendees will be able to enjoy cuisine from Turkey, Nepal, Russia, Ukraine, Nigeria, Japan, Ghana, and Pakistan. Along with the sumptuous food, participants will engage their other senses as well through music, art and fashion from around the globe. Bring your appetite and sense of adventure to The Perch in DSU’s Student Center on April 23rd for a fun evening.

The Blue Hawk Stampede Rodeo will be held Friday and Saturday, May 3rd and 4th at the Stark County Fairgrounds. You will not want to miss this traditional and iconic event that brings some of the best College and University competitors together for several days of competition.

Dickinson State University will be implementing e-sports beginning in the fall of 2019 as a result of overwhelming feedback from the student body based on a fall 2018 survey. The activity will be available at a Club and Varsity level and will also be open to the larger student community, which we believe will be a positive recruiting tool in the coming semester and years.

Dickinson State University has begun to institute its dual mission programming. I want to thank everyone in the Dickinson and western North Dakota community who has donated funding, or helped the university with planning of this unique and forward-thinking pathway. As a Dual Mission University, we can ensure that our students are not only educated at the top levels, but that we are meeting the needs of our western North Dakota workforce. As part of this programming, DSU will be showing eight new programs this summer and fall. On May 15th, the Communications Skills Workshop will beginand a Certified Nursing Assistant program will commence on July 1st. The CNA program has been approved by the North Dakota Board of Health. Do not wait to begin enrolling in your areas of interest!

Dickinson State University will hold its commencement exercises on May 11th in Scott Gymnasium. This is always my favorite time of year when I get to shake the hands of our students as they cross that stage to receive their degree and move toward the next chapter of their lives. They may leave DSU, but they are forever Blue Hawks!

Also that Friday and Saturday is the North Star Athletic Association conference track meet being hosted at the Biesiot Activity Center. I can think of no two better events to help usher in the summer season in Dickinson!

Thank you, Dickinson family, and until next time, GO BLUE HAWKS!
