DSU student receives grant from the North Dakota Department of Health

February 9, 2022

Written by Luisa Popp, DSU Student Intern

During May 2021, the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) opened a grant application, giving students the opportunity to improve COVID-19 communication at their school. The goal was to make information more accessible, especially for international students. I’m Luisa Popp, a Dickinson State University (DSU) senior from Germany. Being an international student during the pandemic has been challenging, so I wanted to help other international students—and students in general—to be less confused and have reliable information at hand. If you want to read more about the challenges of being an international student amidst a pandemic, you should read DSU International Students and COVID-19. I applied for and secured the grant with help from Wynter Miller, former director of international programs and multicultural affairs at DSU and Eric Grabowsky, DSU associate professor of communication.

Dickinson State University (DSU) has a wide variety of students, most of whom are from North Dakota, Montana, or South Dakota, but there are also students that have traveled great distances to attend our university. Two of these are Aqsa Syed, from Pakistan, and Juliana Alves Ribeiro, from Brazil. I am also an international student. My name is Luisa Popp, and I’m from Germany. Getting to DSU and living here, has never been as easy for international students as it is for those whose hometowns are closer to Dickinson, North Dakota, but the COVID-19 pandemic has added another layer of difficulty. Here are a few of our experiences.

2021-COVID-MASK-RECOMMENDED-MAIN.jpg

DSU is planning to return to the full campus experience this fall semester, and we’re excited to get rolling!

We continue to closely monitor the situation and are working with local health officials to ensure that we all are doing our best to protect our students, faculty, staff, and guests. Naturally, the campus must be highly responsive and flexible given the fluidity of COVID-19. We appreciate your understanding of the work that everyone is doing to ensure the campus health and safety.

Just a reminder that you will continue to receive updates and information as appropriate via www.dickinsonstate.edu/covid and official university channels. Fall procedures will be updated and posted soon.

“From the Hawks’ Nest” is a monthly column written by Dickinson State University President Steve Easton for The Dickinson Press.

Dickinson State University (DSU) is quite active in these enjoyable warm days.

In May, we held DSU’s first outdoor graduation. The weather was almost perfect, though a bit on the hot side for those in academic robes. The Class of 2021 demonstrated guts and grit by persevering through the many changes the pandemic forced upon us.

A paper written by Dr. Eric Brevik, professor of geology and soils at Dickinson State University (DSU), was recently highlighted by the Soil Science Society of America. The paper, titled Pivoting to online laboratories due to COVID-19 using the “Science of Agriculture” digital tools: A case study, focuses on the rapid adaptation to remote teaching for laboratory courses Brevik experienced at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the tools he used to instruct successfully in a remote environment. The paper underwent a full peer review and was accepted for publication in Natural Sciences Education, a journal from the American Society of Agronomy.
