During this time of uncertainty, those in the medical profession have been pushed to their limits as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the nation and the world. Not only has this atmosphere changed the way medical professionals work, but it has also changed how those looking to enter the profession study. The brightest rays of hope shine on these students. This semester, nursing students from Dickinson State University (DSU) will be completing their clinicals and these challenges have certainly not kept them from persevering.

How they’re going to pay for a college education is usually one of the first questions students ask themselves when deciding to pursue a degree. They often seek out scholarships and grant funding in order to lessen their financial load rather than taking on additional debt, and one organization in Western North Dakota is helping several Dickinson State University (DSU) students do just that. The Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation (TRMF) has awarded scholarships to five DSU students who interned for them during the summer season and demonstrated hard work and dedication.

Student Spotlight: Yuuka Taniguchi ’22, agri-business and international business major

Tell us a little about your life before you came to Dickinson State University (DSU).

I grew up in the small town of Shimizu, which is in the middle of Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan’s main islands. I grew up on a dairy farm run by my family and lived with my parents, grandparents and my three older sisters, so I loved having animals around me. I “helped” my parents since I was a little child. I started dreaming about visiting the United States since I was in elementary school and came to the U.S. for the first time when I was in the eighth grade. I came with my sister city exchange program for a short-term homestay program. Since then, I really started getting interested in learning English and interacting with people from different places. I went to high school about three hours away from my family, and they have an English department so I could learn it more. During my junior year, I came to Dickinson for a one-year exchange program and went to New England Public School about 30 miles south of Dickinson.

Student Spotlight: Trey Fischbach ’22, soil science and farm management major

Tell us a little about your life before you came to Dickinson State University (DSU).

I grew up in Northeast Wyoming in the little town of Moorcroft, about 30 miles south of Devil’s Tower. My friends and I would have a bunch of fun doing the sorts of things that all country kids love to do: hunting, fishing, bonfires, and just enjoying life. Our wrestling team had been very successful, and all of my friends and I wrestled. I was on the football and track teams, as well.
