Written by Luisa Popp, DSU Student Intern

During May 2021, the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) opened a grant application, giving students the opportunity to improve COVID-19 communication at their school. The goal was to make information more accessible, especially for international students. I’m Luisa Popp, a Dickinson State University (DSU) senior from Germany. Being an international student during the pandemic has been challenging, so I wanted to help other international students—and students in general—to be less confused and have reliable information at hand. If you want to read more about the challenges of being an international student amidst a pandemic, you should read DSU International Students and COVID-19. I applied for and secured the grant with help from Wynter Miller, former director of international programs and multicultural affairs at DSU and Eric Grabowsky, DSU associate professor of communication.

Student Spotlight: Yuuka Taniguchi ’22, agri-business and international business major

Tell us a little about your life before you came to Dickinson State University (DSU).

I grew up in the small town of Shimizu, which is in the middle of Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan’s main islands. I grew up on a dairy farm run by my family and lived with my parents, grandparents and my three older sisters, so I loved having animals around me. I “helped” my parents since I was a little child. I started dreaming about visiting the United States since I was in elementary school and came to the U.S. for the first time when I was in the eighth grade. I came with my sister city exchange program for a short-term homestay program. Since then, I really started getting interested in learning English and interacting with people from different places. I went to high school about three hours away from my family, and they have an English department so I could learn it more. During my junior year, I came to Dickinson for a one-year exchange program and went to New England Public School about 30 miles south of Dickinson.

Student Spotlight: Daniel Suazo-Amaya ’20

Daniel Suazo-Amaya, a senior at DSU.

Tell us about your life before you came to Dickinson State University (DSU).

I’m an only child and I’m 23 years old. I went to high school in Honduras, specifically San Pedro Sula, which has about 1.2 million people. I grew up with my parents and my grandparents, so after school, I’d usually stay with one of my grandparents and just spend the afternoon.
My school’s graduating class was only 11 people. We have so many schools, and most of them are private. I went to the same school for elementary, middle and high school.
