Dickinson State University Professor of History Dr. David A. Meier’s most recent contribution to CHOICE magazine will address “Escapees: the History of Jews Who Fled Nazi Deportation Trains in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands,” a book by Tanja von Fransecky (Berghahn Books, 2019). Fransecky researched the actual accounts of Nazi train deportations through eyewitness accounts, less-used legal sources, and documents from the recently opened Red Cross archives.

Dr. David A. Meier, professor of history for Dickinson State University’s department of social sciences, recently contributed to CHOICE magazine. He addressed Catherine Hanley’s Matilda: Empress, Queen, Warrior (Yale, 2019) which covered Matilda’s place in the complicated world of politics in 12th century Europe. The review appeared in October 2019, Vol. 57, Issue 2.

Dr. David A. Meier, professor of history at Dickinson State University, recently contributed to the Holocaust and Genocide Studies Journal. His article appeared May 17, 2019. Holocaust and Genocide Studies, a major forum for scholarship on the Holocaust and other genocides, is an international journal featuring research articles, interpretive essays, and book reviews in the social sciences and humanities. It is the principal publication to address the issue of how insights into the Holocaust apply to other genocides.

J. Higham’s King Arthur: the making of the legend (Yale, 2018). Higham’s book covered a vast array of claims to King Arthur and his entourage, linguistic breadcrumbs reaching into Iran, as well as some debate about Arthur’s origins as a Roman commander.

The Mission of Herman Stern documentary to premier at Dickinson State

Dickinson State University (DSU) is premiering Video Arts Studios’ latest documentary, The Mission of Herman Stern, Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 6:30 p.m. in Beck Auditorium. The film chronicles the life of North Dakota businessman Herman Stern and his efforts to help Jews escape persecution during the Holocaust. The story features current interviews with people that were rescued in the 1930s and 1940s.
