Things have changed drastically in the last few months for us all. The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way we learn, communicate and live, in general. One thing that has remained steady, however, is the selfless nature of members of the Dickinson State University (DSU) community who serve in the National Guard. Their lives look a little different from normal, like the rest of us. Now that summer has begun, they’ve taken their free time to enjoy their hobbies and loved ones, and they prepared to fight the pandemic if they were called.

Roxanne Gray is a nontraditional student with traditional values. She is planning to graduate with a degree in agricultural studies in 2021. She worked for years before deciding to pursue a degree, and like many students at Dickinson State University, her classes have been moved to a virtual environment. With the increased flexibility in her schedule, she has taken it upon herself to sew and donate masks to her community of Mandaree, North Dakota, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lindsey Miller loves rodeo. No one can deny that. She’s been riding horses since she could walk and participating in the sport since age four. She started youth rodeo at age 11 and gave it her all. Her efforts have paid off in the numerous buckles she’s won at various rodeos and barrel races. After years of practice and growth, she won the title “Miss Rodeo North Dakota Winter Show” this year and the Dickinson State University community couldn’t be more proud of this Blue Hawk.

Luckily, Dickinson State University (DSU) has its very own branch of the Nursing Students’ Association (NSA). This organization provides a plethora of benefits to nursing students, the Dickinson State community, and to the state of North Dakota as a whole. At DSU, the NSA participates in a variety of charity work, student academic development, and social activities related to nursing and healthcare.

Sparks Fly: DSU offers welding courses for students and community members

I wasn’t wandering aimlessly around the Dickinson State University (DSU) Agriculture Building long before adjunct instructor Mr. Ben Krebs pulled me into the room 107 workshop. Inside, students leaned around the scrap metal pile, talking shop before class. I could tell they were excited to get to work. As class began, the students began gearing up – close-toed shoes, denim pants, fire-resistant jackets, and, most importantly, glasses and a helmet to protect their skin and eyes from the sparks that were about to fly.

Amanda, a senior student at Dickinson State University.

Written by Amanda D’Aniello

Hi guys! My name is Amanda D’Aniello. I was born and raised in Branford, Connecticut. I belong to a small, but diverse, working-class family. It was always a dream of mine to attend college, and now I’m a senior here at Dickinson State University (DSU). I’ve spent all four years of my undergraduate studies at DSU and am incredibly excited to graduate in May. I came here as a freshman in 2016 right after I graduated from Branford High School. I lived in DeLong Hall for a year with a roommate from Pakistan. It was a wonderful experience, and I still keep in contact with my former roommate. The next year, I moved into the campus apartments before finally moving off campus into my very first apartment. I’ve met some of my closest friends by living and working on and around campus. You may have seen me in the school cafeteria helping people use their meal plans or cleaning up tables. Now, you can find me in the tutoring center helping students perfect their papers and indulging in my love of writing, editing and revising.
