“And I knew exactly what to do. But in a much more real sense, I had no idea what to do.” – Michael Scott

Nothing describes the average college student trying to navigate the waters of the college dating pool better than this quote from the former hit sitcom, The Office. However, for Afton Garland and Sam Bisson, it wasn’t that complicated. The pair knew each other from their jobs as a lifeguard and front desk worker respectively at the West River Community Center. They were also both involved in CRU and the Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Program.

A lot of people have found love while attending college at Dickinson State.  For two alumni, their love story started a little differently.  Tami Hilton and Aric Mines went to college at Dickinson State University at around the same time in the late 1990’s.  They knew each other and partied together, but they never actually dated.  Aric was on the football team and a few years older than Tami.  Tami was a social butterfly and a big supporter of the Blue Hawk athletic teams. They were even neighbors in the legendary “Blues” apartment complex adjacent to the football field.

Everyone knows that Dr. Varney is a great professor, but who would have thought that his excellent teaching would turn out to be a match making technique? Surely not Mandy (Moor) Sterkel ’12 who, after accidentally walking into his Battle of Gettysburg history class, decided to stick it out. The only open area was next to a guy she didn’t know named Destry Sterkel ‘13.

For those of us that are recent or current attendees of Dickinson State University, being a Blue Hawk is all we have ever known. We take pride in it. Phrases such as “Hawks Are Up”, “Hawk Day”, and “I’d rather be a Hawk…” are regularly heard around campus and at sporting events. We have a Hawk Rock, Blue Hawk Hub, and the DSU Heritage Foundation’s tailgating vehicle The Hawks Nest. Wherever you go on campus, the Hawk isn’t far behind.

A man that cares a lot about the College on the Hill is one way to describe Lavern Jessen.  As a retired administrator, residents of Dickinson will usually always see Jessen proudly wearing Blue Hawk gear. As a man who coached at Dickinson State before taking on an administrative role, Jessen’s pride continues to run deep through his veins.

For Erv and Marilyn Kessel, it seems that becoming part of the Dickinson State family was inevitable. Both being born and raised in Dickinson, they headed to DSTC after graduating from Dickinson High School in 1955. Erv majored in physical education with an English and social studies minor. Meanwhile, Marilyn stopped attending after two years to help put Erv through college when they got married.
