“From the Hawks’ Nest” is a monthly column written by Dickinson State University President Steve Easton for The Dickinson Press.

In my first monthly column, I shared with you how Dickinson State University (DSU) improved the lives of many generations of my family in fulfilling its mission of providing high quality, accessible programs. Now, more than 100 years after the University’s inception in 1918, our staff and faculty continue to be innovative leaders in higher education, expanding access to education for students near and far.

In Western North Dakota, agriculture is known for being one of the most important industries. Students planning a career in agriculture often seek higher education but also want to time outside the classroom getting their hands dirty.

Fortunately, at Dickinson State University, that is exactly what the ag department specializes in: making sure students get the best education they can give in the classroom, and providing hands-on learning experience outside the classroom.

Beginning March 5, Dickinson State University students make their directorial debuts on the university’s mainstage at Dorothy Stickney Auditorium in May Hall, beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Sat. March. 6 p.m and again at 2 p.m. on Sun. March. 7.

Associate Professor of Theatre and Communication Arts Jarvis Jahner said after COVID-19 put a damper on last year’s scheduled shows, Jahner’s department decided to move the show to the main theatre in order to allow social distancing.

“We’re doing (the plays) on our main stage because of COVID, so we can have an audience and they can be socially distant, normally we would do it in our black box theater…it’s kind of a different year for us,” Jahner said.
